Challenge
The hard part of a chat app is not the feature list but making every message arrive and every call ring on every device instantly – even when the app is not open.
Solution
The server runs in Rust and keeps connections over WebSocket. Voice calls go peer to peer over WebRTC, through a TURN relay when needed; a call rings on all of the callee's devices and is picked up on whichever one answers.
Notifications arrive three ways: Web Push, Firebase (Android) and APNs (iOS). The web client is an installable PWA, and the native Windows client is written in Rust.
| Messaging | Rooms, private messages, replies, reactions, pins, editing, search, attachments |
|---|---|
| Voice | WebRTC peer-to-peer, TURN relay as fallback |
| Notifications | Web Push · FCM · APNs |
| Stack | Rust · Actix Web · WebSocket · PostgreSQL · egui (desktop client) |
